This German Shepherd is pawing over pages of cats, proving that you can teach an old dog new tricks! Across Australia every week more than 100 trained dogs are helping around 865 children at 118 schools to develop their reading skills. Lynda and Jessie, (Members of Eastern Branch) attend Rangeview Primary School on a regular basis where the students are very excited to welcome them and participate in the reading program. Read more about this program on storydogs.org.au.

Lynda and 'Jessie' help children at Rangeview Primary School.

About: Lynda teaches water aerobics and she is a hard working member of the Eastern Branch of the German Shepherd Club.

Dog breed: Long-haired German Shepherd

How we met: I already had a rescue German Shepherd and thought he'd like a friend so rescued Jessie in April 2014.

Great loves: Swimming, balls and sneaking food off the bench if anything is left out!

Not like: Does not like being sprayed by the hose.

Quirks: She always brings a toy to us when we get home from work.

On Sunday 23rd March, Andrew Saliba gave a very interesting demonstration  with his beautiful dog. He showed us how our dogs can be trained in obedience by being consistent with our commands and our attitude.

He then asked if people would like to join him for a workshop.  There were about eight people who took him up on his offer. Everyone was very pleased with the demonstration and the workshop that followed. Thank you, Andrew!

MOOMBA 2014

It was great to see Malvern Branch along with Michael Simmons and Cato (Eastern Branch) take part in the Moomba Parade this year.

While 2014 was initially off to a great start, we had a period of about three weeks where we could not hold training!

Thank you for your patience and support during this time.

Today, Sunday 9th March was our first week back and even though not all our regulars were in attendance due to their participation at the GSDCV Champ Show, we had a very good  turn out.

It was a beautiful warm Autumn day and both handlers and dogs enjoyed their classes.

Our first Sunday training session for 2014 got off to a flying start on the 12th January.

We welcomed a number of visitors from other clubs participating in the Show Class training, along with a good number of handlers and dogs from Eastern Branch.

The Canteen and BBQ were up and running and most people hung around for some light refreshments after class. Thank you to all the members who helped to make our first training session so enjoyable.

We look forward to another great year in 2014 and we welcome all new members to our club. If you are able to offer your assistance in any way please contact a committee member or myself via the web page, as the more people we have helping, the smoother the club will run!!

.

While the Puppy class went for a walk, the older dogs came inside with Rosie to practice some drops, sits and stays!! They seemed to enjoy being inside for a change!

A review of some of the activities featured in 2013

Our Christmas break-up at the Eastern Branch was held last Sunday. Everyone had a wonderful time with lots of fun activities and three Santas arrived to give out gifts to the dogs and their owners!

WE LOOK FORWARD TO MANY MORE FUN TIMES, PHOTOS AND ENJOYABLE SUNDAYS NEXT YEAR!

KEEP COMING, IT'S GOOD FOR YOU AND VERY GOOD FOR YOUR DOGS!!

(and helps build a stronger club!!)

Display Team at Kew Primary School Fete

On Saturday 16th November the Eastern Display Team (formerly known as the Demonstration Team) completed two routines at the Kew Primary School Fete. They performed at 2:45pm and 4:15pm. All the dogs were very well behaved and were fantastic at the skills they displayed in front of the fete goers. The children, especially, liked patting the dogs and they thought it was fun if the dogs licked them!!! There were many adults who were interested in the breed and it was obvious that some of their perceptions about German Shepherds changed because of this interaction. A big 'Thank You' to Michael and Cato; Andrew and Ozka; Barbara and Amber; Mary and Mister; Norman and Schaefer; Lynda and Sargent; Lisa and Indie and Pauli for her great job as Master of Ceremonies! You all did the Club proud!!

FUN DAY

"The 2013 GSDCV funday is over for another year. Congrats to everyone involved in organising and running the day hosted by Eastern branch, the  judges/stewards and most importantly the members and their dogs who competed. Nearly 200 dogs from all 11 branches across Victoris, the ground mid morning was packed as everyone went through obedience and show rings. Some great performances.... many even surprised themselves. A great club event for all!!" GSDCV

Thank you to all the clubs and their members who supported 'Fun Day' and to Eastern Branch for holding the event this year. A lot of time and effort goes into planning and setting up an event like this and cleaning up afterwards. So, a big thank you to everyone who helped, in any capacity.

It was great to speak with members from other clubs and meet their gorgeous dogs. Whether your dog took out a place in their event (1st, 2nd or 3rd), I am sure that they enjoyed participating in the various activities. This is Morpheus with proud owners Valerie and Wai Leng from Malvern Branch. He got a 1st place in Class 3 Obedience and in Tunnels.

Miguel Costales with Zephyr from Eastern Branch. Miguel writes,"Great day at funday. Expect the Unexpected. The boy won his first obedience trial and agility trial. Happy dad right here!"

Congratulations to our beautiful Ruby for coming 1st in Class 1 Obedience at her very first Fun Day, and Ozka for coming 3rd in Class 3 Obedience, competing against a lot older dogs.

A very special mention must be made for Miss Sunni who was entered in obedience by her new family and scored a perfect 200!! Well done, Sunni!

We look forward to seeing many more photos of the day, as they come to hand!

Champ and Working Dog Shows

John Schulz sent some information regarding the shows that may interest you! Thank you, John!

"Some photos of Nelke taken at last weekend's 'Champ and Working Dog Shows' at Sunbury. Nelke came 7th in a strong field on Saturday under Ms Melanie Groth (NSW) and 7th again on Sunday against an equally strong field under Herr Peter Schweimer (SV) Gmy. On both days she was graded "Excellent", a grading that she has received thirteen times in 2013. On both days Nelke was very capably handled by Michelle Mercieca of Western Branch.

Our Members and their dogs participate in a variety of activities. Some are directly linked to the club and others are of a more personal nature, all of which help to promote the breed and display their intelligence, good behaviour and loyalty.

An example of this was sent to me by one of our members today, so I thought that I would share it with you.

"Carl here, Cailin's owner. I am sending some photos from the No Stomach for Cancer Walk, held yesterday Saturday 2nd November, at the Tan. I had my Stomach Spleen and part of Pancreas removed 20 years ago, as I had stomach cancer. So there is now a worldwide walk held on the 2nd November each year to raise awareness, as Stomach Cancer is the second biggest cause of death in the world from cancer, but little is spoken or written about it. So the walk is part of the awareness to raise the profile of it.

Cailin came on the walk, as did other dogs, but she was the only German Shepherd, and my wife Deb had made saddle cloth with the words, I AM WALKING WITH MY BEST FRIEND on it. My family also came, my daughter Laura and her husband and 3 boys, my son Kris, his wife and their one boy."

Thank you Carl for sharing your story with us and your contribution to our web page.

We have a number of new members at our club which is great, we welcome them and hope that they have fun taining their dogs and share in all that the club has to offer.

Ethel has resigned from her position as Grounds Manager. Ethel has performed her duties in this role for over 10 years. This has required her to be at the Club at 8:30am on a Training Day to put out on the ground whatever training equipment is required, set up Rings, provide water buckets and Poo buckets, etc. Ethel has always performed these duties with good humour and dedication.

We are looking for someone to take over this very importatnt role! If you would like to apply for the position please contact Peter or Amanda to get full details.

Eastern's demo team perfored twice daily at the Royal Melbourne Show this year. Thank you to Michael and all the people in the team who gave up their precious time to participate in this activity. By all accounts it was a great success and the dogs performed beautifully! What a great way to show off our fantastic dogs and highlight the friendly nature and intelligence of the German Shepherd dog breed.

Fund Raising: Ben organises all our sausage sizzles at Bunnings and Masters, he has done a fantastic job and raised lots of money for our club. Thank you Ben! Please support Ben by putting your name down on a roster to help with these activities as they appear on the calendar.

Canberra: Congratulations to Amanda and Pipa on your fine achievements at a show in Canberra. On Saturday 5th October Pipa obtained a 3rd place Puppy Bitch and on Sunday 6th October, a 2nd place Puppy Bitch. Go Pipa!! She is certainly making her presence felt!! Well done Amanda in training such a clever puppy!

Congratulations to Amanda and Pipa on your success in Sydney at the German Shepherd Dog League Inc Spring Fair Speciality Championship Show on 31st August and 1st Spetember.

Amanda has kept us up to date with the results via Facebook, should you need to know any particular results please contact her via her email address.

Congratulations Amanda and Pipa on your success at the Broken Hill German Shepherd Club 68th Annual Champioship Show.

Check out the Eastern Facebook page for results in all catagories of the show. Thank you Amanda for keeping us updated and your very thorough list of results! I am sure that you are very proud of your little girl and her successes this weekend! Personally, I was very proud to see a Stobar puppy, Stobar Rosetta, Minor Puppy Bitch winner and our Ozka's father, Bluemax Zoomba won Reserve Challenge dog!

Congratulations to John Schulz and Helena Walter for your great success with Nelke being called out first on both days in open and placing 2nd and 3rd on each day respectively. On the Saturday, Nelke was awarded Reserve Challenge Bitch and graded excellent on both days. Here is a photo of her!

Congratulations to Mary and Norm!

On Saturday 17th August 2013, Mary and Norm took a special training class as part of their Instructors exam. We are proud to say they passed with flying colours! Thank you to all the owners and dogs who helped by turning up to participate in this special class.

Sunday's normal classes were well attended in spite of the ferocious winds and chilly weather! A few of the Class 3 dogs made the most of their off lead training to go for that 'little extra run' around the grounds! As usual they all returned to their owners and resumed class peacefully! I am sure that there were some jealous dogs, wishing that they were in that class!! Don't forget that there is an Open Committee Meeting in the club rooms, next Sunday 25th August after training. Come along, have some lunch and join in the meeting. Please leave your dogs in the car, crate them or take them home before the meeting. Thanks.

Michael Holden and Meljenka Dynasty (Tash)

CDDhave now obtained their CD Title. This team obtained 174 points at Hastings and came 4th in the Ring, 184 points at Southern and came 3rd in the ring and to achieve their CD Title gained 178 points at KCC Park. Congratulations and well done to this wonderful team!

Jane McGloin and Stobar Kazper (Kazper) together with Wendy Kukla obtained their 2nd Tracking Pass at Broadford (Tracking Club of Victoria) on the14th July. Wendy was the track layer and the trail was set over an 800 metre distance. The weather on Sunday was bitterly cold, plus it was raining. Their pass was rated 'Very Good'. Congratulations and well done to this effective team!

Congratulations to Mellisa Siktars on recently passing and qualifying as a Show Instructor.

Mel had worked diligently in obtaining this qualification and her expertise will be used to great effect at Eastern.
